Orange Growth Capital founding partner Radboud Vlaar is the latest distinguished speaker announced for the FinTech Investor Forum in London on November 8.
The event connects CEOs of successful FinTech startups and scale-ups together with 100 FinTech investment firms and financial institutions.
Vlaar has been instrumental in helping to grow the company become one of the biggest European and Asian FinTech investors after only four years in operation. The company currently has offices in London, Amsterdam and Singapore and its team comprises of founders of the biggest European FinTech companies, as well as those from venture capital and private equity. The company’s $10m investment in advanced context intelligence & insights provider Squirro in July was the firm’s fourteenth investment since its foundation.
Having established a strong presence in London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Stockholm and Basel, the firm is setting its sights further afield, with ambitious plans to further expand in Asian markets. The firm has already entered Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam, but wants to make more investments in India and take advantage of the one of the fastest growing global economies. Vlaar will be integral to these plans.
In a recent interview with FinTech Global, Vlaar said the company’s refined approach to investing is the perfect way to take advantage of the opportunities the sector provides.
“For FinTech B2C companies it takes a long time and a lot of capital to build trust and win customers over, which I think is more complex and a lot more time consuming than people expect. As a result, we are selective in B2C and focus only on these companies with smart marketing strategies.”
Vlaar also told FinTech Global that Orange Growth Capital has identified typically less attractive areas of the market, which are ripe for growth. “If you go to the little, less sexy parts of financial technology such as security, back and mid office, there are a lot of areas where there is less focus from mainstream investors. These areas have characteristics such as data protection, partnership and complex procurement processes that make it quite an attractive area to invest in.”
Vlaar was a manager at global private investment firm TPG at the turn of the millennium, before becoming partner at management consulting firm McKinsey in 2002 . He then co-founded Orange Growth Capital in 2013 to support FinTech entrepreneurs in areas such as AI, payments and insurance.
